Background
Site DescriptionChattahoochee River National Recreation Area (CHAT) was established to provide recreational opportunities and access to the Chattahoochee River and the historic and cultural resources contained within. The rich human history along the banks of the Chattahoochee River includes; prehistoric sites, early industrial sites, historic bridges and other points of significant historical value. The Akers Mill ruins represent a significant period in the industrial history and evolution within the Atlanta metropolitan area. Few notable water powered industrial complexes survive near the banks of the Chattahoochee River in their historic context and adjacent to a waterway for producing power. The noteworthy ruins remaining at Akers Mill area represent structures designed to mill corn and wheat during the transition from water to steam power. The mill operated before, during and after the American Civil War.
Project DescriptionAkers Mill is an important historic component of the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area (CHAT), managed by the National Park Service but has several immediate needs as part of ongoing management and stabilization including. In 2013 CyArk and Clemson University collaborated with the National Park Service to provide. Accurate 3D recordation of existing conditions of the Akers Mill Ruins, Assess the site in order to develop a stabilization priority, and provide ongoing access to accurate data and stabilization reports for the management of the site and future creation of additional deliverables.
