Background
Site DescriptionDotonbori, Osaka’s iconic entertainment and dining district, is a sensory explosion of neon lights, towering billboards, and bustling energy centered along the Dōtonbori Canal. Renowned for its extravagant signage—like the glowing Glico Running Man and the mechanized Kani Doraku crab—the area has been a hub of commerce and culture since the 17th century, originally flourishing as a theater district. Today, it epitomizes Osaka’s “kuidaore” (“eat until you drop”) ethos, with narrow streets packed with street food stalls, Michelin-starred restaurants, and izakayas serving local specialties such as takoyaki (octopus balls) and okonomiyaki (savory pancakes). While modernization has transformed much of the neighborhood, its historic bridges, like Ebisu-bashi, and vintage theaters still echo its Edo-era roots, making it a vivid symbol of Osaka’s unapologetic zest for life.
