| Site Description | Ancient Kourion, located on Cyprus's southern coast near Limassol, was a significant city-kingdom dating from the Neolithic period through Roman times. Among its most remarkable features are the well-preserved mosaics in the House of Eustolios, a late Roman villa from the early 5th century CE.
The House of Eustolios contains exceptional mosaic floors featuring geometric patterns, Christian symbolism, and inscriptions. The entrance mosaic includes a welcoming Greek inscription, while the central hall displays intricate designs with birds and fish. One notable mosaic depicts Ktisis, the personification of creation, holding a Roman measuring rod.
These mosaics represent the transition from pagan to Christian art in Late Antiquity, combining classical craftsmanship with early Byzantine motifs, making them invaluable examples of Mediterranean artistic evolution during this pivotal period. | |
