Background
Site Description
The Byzantine Wreck of Bacino Grande is located in the coastal waters of Porto Cesareo, in a shallow environment characterised by mobile sandy sediments. The context is generally attributed to the Byzantine / Early Medieval period (9th–10th century AD) and has been referenced in relation to archaeological investigations carried out in the area, including phases of excavation documented in the past. The site preserves residual hull remains embedded in sediment, with exposure conditions influenced by local hydrodynamics and seasonal sediment redistribution. This sedimentological setting is a key component of the wreck’s preservation: alternating burial and exposure can both protect wooden components and simultaneously complicate their long term stability and visibility. The Bacino Grande wreck is also historically associated with notable finds from its vicinity, including a gold signet ring bearing the name Basilios, discussed in relation to Byzantine presence and connections in the central Mediterranean.

Project Description
Fieldwork focused on producing a continuous and analytically usable 3D record of both the surviving hull structure and the surrounding sedimentological context. Photogrammetric acquisition combined standard camera coverage to ensure completeness, geometric robustness, and adequate surface detail. The resulting photogrammetric products have been processed to obtain a continuous 3D model suitable for archaeological reading (structural elements, interfaces between wood and sediment, and local microtopography). For spatial integration and future monitoring, GNSS coordinates have been acquired to georeference the model within a shared reference system. This step provides a stable framework for repeat documentation, comparison across seasons or campaigns, and integration with other coastal and underwater datasets.
