| Site Description | Feature 001 is a traditional stilt house (Rumah Adat) mainly composed of wooden materials and with a thatched hipped roof. Four wooden panels interlock to fix the top of the roof; each is painted with a red, black, and white color scheme. The northwest and southeast ends of this interlocked panel structure resemble the motif of a reptile head. This ridge is also flanked by two upturned wooden panels, with three triangular shapes on top and other colorful motifs. While the main structure of the roof is composed of wooden framing, the edge of the roof is supported by stilted posts (aribtue) connected to the horizontal beam.
The main room of this building is enclosed by woven bamboo (batang awur) walls. This elevated space is supported by four large columns, joined to a pair of horizontal beams (lu') stacked perpendicularly on top of another pair of horizontal beams (tadu'i). The joint between the columns and the horizontal beams is tied together with rattan hitches and knots. Meanwhile, this room is flanked by two veranda structures (tet) in the east and in the west, on the same elevated platform. A long bench is placed underneath the western veranda.
The main room can be accessed via stairs that lead up to the verandas from the northwest and the northeast corners. There is a window adjacent to each of the doors that leads into the room, on the eastern and western walls respectively. Each of the veranda has elaborately painted and decorated wooden railings, painted in the same color scheme as the ridge on the roof.
Additionally, the furniture and components of this house, including the wooden stairs, the door frame, and the horizontal beams on the floor, are also ornately decorated, with carved elements painted in black, white, and red.
Inside the house, there is a narrow space on the upper section of the northern and southern bounding wall that is used as a shelf. There are also two fireplaces for cooking installed at the southeastern and northeastern corners of this room. The floor of this house is covered with flattened bamboo. | |
| Project Description | The Maritime Asia Heritage Survey works to systematically inventory and digitally document the endangered cultural heritage in the Maldives, Indonesia, Thailand and elswhere across the region. The materials documented through this work are critically endangered, facing both natural and human threats that jeopardize the survival and accessibility of historical information for this vital node in pre-modern global economic and religious networks at the cross-roads of an interconnected Indian Ocean world. The data made available here was collected by our Field Team using FARO Focus S350 terrestrial laser scanner, Nikon DSLR camera, and DJI drone platform. | |
