Background
Site Description
A traditional stilt house with thatch and wood as the main material. A steeply-pitched hip roof covers an elevated main room and an open space (lik taha) underneath it. A narrow ridge on top of the roof is shaped into a distinct pinnacle (katilang). The thatch of the roof is attached to vertical and horizontal bamboo framing with rattan rope. The edges of the thatch are cut in an undulating pattern with protruding parts in the corners and the middle. The whole structure is supported by four wooden columns attached to a pair of wooden beams (hawetmiya) with rattan. The upper part of each column features an oval wooden disk. Horizontal beams supported by sixteen small wooden posts support the middle of the roof. The area above the main room is used as an attic, accessed via a wooden ladder secured by a large flat stone at the northeastern corner. The attic is divided into several partitions by wooden railings, each with simple bamboo stick flooring. Flattened bamboo flooring covers the main open platform, with bamboo railings on the central, outer western side, and southeastern corner. A wooden stair faces north within a notched part on the northeastern corner. The corners of the platform are supported by posts. The middle of the main room/platform is enclosed with low-height bamboo walls, and there is a fireplace within the enclosure. A long wooden bench is placed north of the elevated house.

Project Description
The Maritime Asia Heritage Survey works to systematically inventory and digitally document the endangered cultural heritage in the Maldives, Indonesia, Thailand and elswhere across the region. The materials documented through this work are critically endangered, facing both natural and human threats that jeopardize the survival and accessibility of historical information for this vital node in pre-modern global economic and religious networks at the cross-roads of an interconnected Indian Ocean world. The data made available here was collected by our Field Team using FARO Focus S350 terrestrial laser scanner, Nikon DSLR camera, and DJI drone platform.
