| Site Description | The historic SIO Directors House was chosen as a case study for this project. Built in 1913, it is
one of SIO’s original buildings, serving as the residence of the first director, William E. Ritter.
After being the home of the first three directors of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography and
their families, the residence was converted into offices used by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife
Service and the Deep Sea Drilling Program. From 1975 to 2017, it became the home of the
California Sea Grant Program. The property underwent a major renovation in 1997, and is now
made available to SIO faculty as a highly valuable common space, enabling highly impactful
formal and informal intra-institutional and community engagement.
